Margaret Mead had rightly said, “It is easier to change a man's religion than to change his diet.” For most of us, changing unhealthy eating habits is a Herculean task.
There are many misconceptions around eating healthy; like equating healthy eating with bland food and unrealistic fitness goals (think v-cut abs and thigh gap) to contradictory food studies and unsustainable fad diets, there are numerous factors that make healthy eating seem like a complicated affair. But it doesn't have to be so overwhelming.
“Healthy eating should be varied and delicious,” says Fiorella DiCarlo, an NYC-based registered dietitian. The more stimulated your palate is, the more likely you are to adhere to eating and preparing nutritious food for yourself and for your loved ones.
Here are 3 easy-peasy tips to start eating healthy(and actually stick to it):
1. Pick real food over processed foodWhen you are short on time, tired to cook or stressed out you may reach for a cup of instant noodles or fast food. Make a conscious decision to select a meal that has vegetables, whole grains and a piece of protein(if preferred). Choose fruit as your snack or dessert when possible. Check our recipe page for inspiration.
2. Choose healthier drink choices
Consuming sugary beverages can cause you mood swings and push your liver in overdrive. Instead of choosing a pre-packaged juice bottle or a cup of soda, go for water infused with lemon or berries or if you prefer something fizzy, choose lemon flavored sparkling water. Our pinterest page shares some popular fruit infused water selections.
3. Keep healthy food readily available
When you get hungry, you’re more likely to eat the first thing you set your eyes on. Set a day to buy healthy snacks and keep them easily accessible and visible in your home and workplace.
Some suggestions will be to place some fruits in a basket on the kitchen counter and pick one or two fruits to bring to work everyday. Or else, at work, store healthy snacks(Hummus Cups, Greek Yoghurt) in your office fridge. Another tip is to store quick bites like almonds, pistachios and dried berries in a jar and place it on your desk.
